This is a wine that has been cherished since the times of the ancient Greeks. It is made in seventeen communes lying in the Calore Valley in the province of Avellino. The epicentre of the production zone is the ancient village of Taurasia from which the wine takes its name.
Taurasi was already renowned for its excellent vineyards in the days of the Roman empire. Taurasi wine is made from one of the most prized varieties of grape in the country: the Aglianico, known in the ancient times as the "Vitis Hellenica".
No more than 15% of non-aromatic red grapes from other vine varieties may be added in the production of this wine. The vine is cordon trained with spur pruning and close spacing. In these specialised vineyards, the yield per hectare rarely exceeds 80 quintals.
Taurasi is intense ruby-red tending to garnet. It has an airy and intense aroma. Its flavour is full-bodied and well-balanced with a long finish. The minimum alcohol content is 12° and the wine must be aged for at least three yeras of which one or two in wooden casks and the remainder in the bottle.
The wine goes very well with a meal based on roasts, game or ripened cheese. Traditionally, it is served with Lasagna alla napoletana. Demand from abroad is growing steadily. Top-grade restaurants and vintners in the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Germany are procuring increasing quantities of the wine to pass on to their best customers.
